Dry eyes with contact lenses? Comfort tips for screens, AC and heat

Long hours on your phone, cold air from the AC, summer heat and dust can all leave your eyes feeling dry. Here's how to keep your coloured lenses comfortable through the day.
Why lenses can feel dry
- Screens: when you focus on a phone or laptop, you blink less often, so your eyes dry out faster.
- Air conditioning: AC pulls moisture out of the air, and air blowing straight at your face dries your eyes even more.
- Heat and dust: hot, dusty days can make eyes feel gritty and tired.
- Long wear: the longer you wear your lenses, the more you feel these effects.
8 ways to stay comfortable
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes on a screen, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Blink on purpose. Every so often, close your eyes fully and gently, then open them. Half blinks don't spread moisture well.
- Move away from the AC vent. Sit where the air doesn't blow straight at your face, at home, in the office and in the car.
- Use the right eye drops. Choose lubricating or rewetting drops that say they are suitable for contact lenses. Ask a pharmacist if you're not sure.
- Wear sunglasses outside. They help keep dust and wind away from your eyes.
- Drink enough water. Staying hydrated helps your whole body feel better, eyes included.
- Stay within your wear time. april. lenses are comfortable for up to 10 hours a day. On long days, give your eyes a break sooner. Here's when to take your lenses out.
- Store them in fresh solution. Fresh solution every time keeps your lenses clean and ready to wear. Never top up old solution.
What to do when your eyes feel dry
- Blink a few times and use a lubricating drop made for contact lenses.
- If your eyes still feel dry, take your lenses out, clean them and store them in fresh solution.
- Give your eyes some time off lenses before you wear them again.
When to see an eye doctor
Dryness that doesn't settle, redness, pain or blurry vision are signs to stop wearing your lenses and see an eye doctor. If you often have dry eyes, ask your eye doctor whether lenses are right for you.
