Contact lens tips every wearer should know

Good habits take a minute a day and make every wear more comfortable. Here are the ten that matter most.
- Wash and dry your hands first. Use soap and water, then dry with a clean towel before you touch your lenses or your eyes.
- Use lens solution, never water. Tap water, bottled water and saliva are not safe for lenses. Clean, rinse and store them only in contact lens solution.
- Rub and rinse after every wear. Place the lens in your palm, add a few drops of solution and rub gently for about 30 seconds. Then rinse and store.
- Use fresh solution every time. Empty the case and refill it each time you store your lenses. Never top up old solution.
- Keep your case clean. Rinse it with solution, let it air-dry face down, and replace it at least every 3 months.
- Never sleep in your lenses. Take them out before any nap or night's sleep. Here's when to take them out.
- Keep them away from water. Remove them before showering, swimming or washing your face.
- Lenses first, makeup second. Put your lenses in before eye makeup, and take them out before you remove it. Keep powders and lash fibres away from the lens.
- Mind the dust. On windy, dusty days, sunglasses help keep particles out. If something gets under the lens, take it out, rinse it and put it back.
- Never share your lenses. Not with a sister, not with a friend. Lenses are personal, like a toothbrush.
When to see an eye doctor
Redness, pain that doesn't settle or blurry vision are signs to stop wearing your lenses and see an eye doctor. A regular eye check-up is a good idea for every lens wearer, even if your vision feels fine.
